UK Advised To Relax Immigration Policies To Get Free Trade

Two countries have spoken out regarding any possible changes to immigration policies in the United Kingdom once it chooses to push through with its exit from the European Union. The exit would actually entail Britain having to lessen the amount of immigrants coming in.

These two countries, Australia and India, have both said that they would like their citizens to have easier access to the country. In exchange for that, they would be providing free trade to the United Kingdom. This would be a great deal and many studies have shown that limiting immigration to the UK would actually do more harm than good.

Australia’s voice on UK immigration policies

Alexander Downer is the high commissioner of Australia to the United Kingdom. It is his job to be the channel to see how policies in the country that he is assigned to would change trade and would affect his home country.

In a recent statement, Downer had been noted to have said that he is also a relaxed set of rules when it comes to restrictions to Australian immigrants to the country. He is calling on Theresa Mary May, the Prime Minister of the UK, to actually do something about this. This is the same call that India has when it comes to immigration policies.

Australia believes that by having a more lax set of policies on immigration for Australians, the UK can also be able to continue having a good relationship with it. Aside from that, the UK would also be able to continue having free trade and trading partnership with Australia even if it decides to do the exit from the European Union.

An agreement is in the works

In an interview with Radio 4 of BBC, Downer declared that the Australian capital Canberra would actually try and work out a deal with UK’s capital, London. The deal would be to assure that the businesses of Australia would be able to easily find their way to the country. If they are able to strike a good deal between the two of them, that would be the time to actually get down and put it into writing.

Recent news have it that the two ministers are already having talks about Australia and UK and its immigration policies as well as free trade between them. An agreement may be in the works but there is nothing solid as of present.

Downer continued that Australia is actually looking for a deal where businesses and people from Australia would be able to easily get into the UK and even find work there if necessary. This situation is happening at present and it is a part of the negotiations that they have had when it comes to free trade.
